Przemek Winnicki (IG @piano.winn), a concert pianist from Poland, recently recorded a video of Debussy’s Arabesque No. 1 in E Major for me. It’s a preview — he said that he will record it again when he has time to play again. But I appreciate this preview very much — so I thought that I would post it!
Arabesque No. 1 is a piece that’s particularly meaningful to me. It’s a piece that I’ve played in recitals when I was very young, so it’s also a piece that I could play with my eyes closed.
In many ways, Debussy is one of my favorite composers, for the music that he writes gives me the flow I need to be lost within it. When I play his music, I could almost feel the music as waves flowing through my body, through my fingers, into my soul, as one — with music, with nature — all of his music allows me to go into a very meditative place.
There aren’t many piano music that touches me in the same manner — but for those which do, if I hear how they’re played, I would know almost everything I need to know about the pianist. The music is as such a medium for communication — Debussy wrote the music, the pianist played it, and I could feel the soul from both. It’s hard to explain this very magical feeling unless you also play musical instruments.
